Dear Jody Williams,

The International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) is excited to learn the news that you and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines are the winner of the Peace Nobel Prize 1997. The Prize honors your outstanding and encouraging efforts to transform a dream of a world free of landmines within a few years into a political issue discussed internationally on the highest level of politics. We are convinced that the Prize will put more pressure to Governments to sign the Ban treaty in Ottawa.

We hope that the prize will encourage also our various member organizations and others to begin or continue their support for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Your exceptional work is a shining example for our own activities in the various fields.

For the very busy weeks to come we wish you upekkha ("equanimity") in all your work.

May all beings happy!

Martin H. Petrich
Executive Secretary

Dear Martin Petrich,

Thank you from all of us at the ICBL for your kind words. We have already seen the impact of the receipt of the NPP on governments. Many more seem to be feeling the pressure to be in Ottawa and sign the treaty.

Hopefully, others will be energized to join our efforts as well.

Thank you again,
Jody Williams

PS: In particular, thanks for your wishes for upekkha ("equanimity") for us. I think sometimes we need it!
