Decade for a Culture of Non-Violence

UN General Assembly Calls for
Decade of Peace and Nonviolence

11 November, 1998

In a historic vote, the United Nations General Assembly yesterday proclaimed the first decade of the twenty-first century "The Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World (2001-2010)."

Fifty years after the death of Mahatma Gandhi and thirty years after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., the call for the Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence came from an Appeal to the United Nations originally signed by twenty-three Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, including the late Mother Theresa, Aung San Suu Kyi, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and President Nelson Mandela.

The Proclamation invites each Member-State to teach the principles of nonviolence at every level of society. UN bodies, NGOs, educational institutions, religious leaders, the media, performing artists and civil societies are summoned to support the Decade for the benefit of the children of the world. The proclamation was issued after speeches by twenty nations calling for a future without war.

"I want to congratulate the Committee on a tremendous achievement," said Anke Kooke, IFOR General Secretary. "The world desperately needs to end the endemic suffering of war and violence. We must dedicate ourselves to ten years of concentrated effort to develop a global culture of peace and nonviolence. Each generation must learn and teach the value of nonviolence and love."
